Professor Catherine Pickering, Discipline Head (Ecology and Evolution) in the School of Environment and Science at Griffith University, will speak about education at the university level. A staff member from the Environmental Education Centre will discuss environmental programs for primary and secondary students. A general discussion will follow on the role of NPQ in “sowing the seed”.

12 noon – 12.30 pm : Guided tour of the Environmental Education Centre

    12.30 pm – 1.30 pm : Lunch to share

After lunch there will be a guided walk in the nearby Mangrove Nature Refuge and saltmarsh area. Those who are interested in joining the walk should wear appropriate clothing (suitable footwear and socks, long pants, long-sleeved shirt, hat, etc.). Prepare for sloppy mud up to your socks at times (although mud washes out, eventually!). Repellent will be essential as there are certain to be biting midges and mosquitoes.

    About the Venue

The Jacobs Well Environmental Education Centre was the first of its kind in Queensland, opened in the 1970s at the former Jacobs Well State School. It's an Education Queensland run facility, staffed by teachers and support staff, who work with visiting students of all ages who come for either day visits or for extended residential "camps" of up to 5 days.

Programs are curriculum-based and mostly centred in one of the local environments such as Moreton Bay (the Centre has boats and canoes, and a bus), the islands of southern Moreton Bay, mangrove forests, eucalypt forests, freshwater ponds as well as some built environments. Centre staff also visit schools to work with teachers and students. Facilities on-site include cabins, amenities block, kitchen, classroom, activities room, dam and outdoor covered student area, plant nursery, bush-tucker garden & boat shed.

    Directions and Parking

The Environmental Education Centre is situated on a small hill amongst the sugar cane fields, on a bend of the Pimpama-Jacobs Well Road. The vehicular exit is off onto a bitumen access road (signposted) just before the intersection with Behms Road. There is off-street parking directly in front of the Centre for about 8 vehicles, and more room at the side of the road in a bus zone (no buses will be there on the day and it's not an official bus zone, so it can be used for parking). There is also parking inside the grounds (access from the side lane) in a designated bitumen parking area.
